| Notes |
- George M. Neece, a young man who would have been 27 years old had he lived untill next Sunday, son of John M. Neece of this city, left on frieght train No. 83 Monday eveing on his way to Kansas City, where he intended to go to work for a concrete sidewalk company. About 1 o'clock that night, when the train was pulling into the siding at Cameron, Conductor Ed Plum from the lookout of his caboose saw a man towards the forward part of the train walking along on top of the cars, but did not know who it was. his attention was called to some other matter & when he looked again the man was gone. when the train passes from the main line to the siding the cars sometimes lurch sidewise. It is supposed that when the car that young Neece was on passed into the siding he was thrown off. There was a number of railroad men around the station & platform, but no one saw the man fall from the top of the train. As the train pulled on up Conductor Wellingham noticed the way car going over some kind of body. After stopping in front of the station, he told the agent he thought the train had run over a man. taking lanterns Wellingham, the agent & others went down the track & found a man, which proved to be the dead body of George M. Neece. The body was carried to the station & an inquest held that morning, the coroners jury returning a verdict of death due to railroad accident. The news of his death reached Brookfield early Tuesday morning. Geo. Rouse & LLoyd Neece, accompanied by J.W. Blacklock of Bowdens undertaking establishment, went to Cameron on the noon train & returned with the body that eveing on train 56. Thus ended the life of a young man born & reared on a farm north of Brookfield, belonging to one of the earlier pioneer families of Linn County. His grandfather, the late Berverly Neece, was one of the early settlers & officials of this county. The families & relatives have the sympathy of a host of friends all over Linn county in their time of grief & sorrow over the death of this splendid young man. The funeral occured Thursday at 10 a.m. from the family residence on East Brook street, conduted by Rev. L.E. Martin, pastor of the Park Bapist church. The pallbearers were G.W. Ross, A.L. Burns, Carroll Clements, Ira S. Gardner, Mark Main & L.S. Simpson.
